5 Simple Ways To Earn More Money Before Moving Abroad
It doesn’t matter if you’re a student without a job or a full-time employee making a decent income, trying to save money for travel is difficult.
After a long week at work, it’s only natural to want to reward yourself when the weekend comes by spending money, whether that be on food, alcohol, shopping etc.
I’m not going to sit here and tell you that you shouldn’t do any of that because although cutting unnecessary costs is important, we all need to indulge from time to time.
That being said, there’s a way you can still save money while not being stupidly frugal.
The easiest way that I’ve found to save money is by earning an extra part-time income.
While there are thousands of different things that you can do to earn more money, I’ve narrowed it down to the top 5. These part-time jobs are able to be done in your free time so there’s no excuse you can’t earn a bit of extra money before moving abroad.
Ways To Make An Extra Income
Here are my top 5 ways to earn an extra income so that you can move abroad sooner:
Do you own a car? Why not put it to use? The truth is that cars are expensive to own and maintain. If you need to use your car and aren’t willing to sell it for a bit of extra savings, you should consider signing up for Uber.
By signing up for Uber, you can choose the hours that you want to work, make AUD$20 an hour and meet lots of interesting people.
Uber has also introduced UberEATS where drivers can now deliver food from restaurants. The hourly wage is generally similar to driving as an Uber driver
Perhaps you don’t want to drive your car for Uber in your spare time and instead prefer to spend time with your friends and family. If you’re willing to sell your car, you’ll be able to save a significant amount of extra income that you can put towards moving overseas.
Don’t have a car? Why not use your bicycle to deliver food? Deliveroo and other delivery companies are now making it extremely easy for anyone with a bicycle to make a bit of extra money.
All you have to do is register to become a rider and turn on the app whenever you’re available. You will be sent a notification anytime there is a food delivery in your area, and all you have to do is accept or decline the invitation to deliver.
The riders are generally paid between AUD$10-$15 per delivery meaning that if you make 2 deliveries an hour you can be making between AUD$20-$30 per hour.
There are so many different freelance opportunities out there, it surprises me that more people don’t get involved. In your spare time and from the convenience of your home, you can apply for freelance gigs to anything from web design to writing.
I’ve done freelance work by SEO writing in the past and found it to be the easiest way to make a bit of extra money in the shortest amount of time. It’s also possible to write articles online that pay a lot higher rate.
If you really want to take your writing to the next level, I recommend learning how to start a travel blog. This is a great way to document your adventures and potentially make money from it.
One of the easiest ways to earn a side income is working in the hospitality industry. Because the hours are generally opposite to those working from 9am-5pm, it gives you the opportunity to earn a decent wage in the evenings and on the weekends.
Furthermore, if you’re able to get some experience in the hospitality industry before moving overseas, it will make it a lot easier to find a hospitality job abroad. Hospitality is a very versatile industry with many different positions available, so there’s something for everyone.
Working as a barman has been my go-to job whenever I need to make money quickly.
If you have a spare bedroom in your apartment or house, consider renting out your spare room. AirBnb offers you the opportunity to rent out that extra bedroom that you aren’t using anyway.
If you can make an extra AUD$50-$100 per night by renting out your room, you’ll be able to save your money a lot faster and be moving abroad before you know it.
If you’re really desperate, you could rent out your own bedroom during busy periods and stay with a friend. One of my friends decided to sleep on the beach for 2 nights so that he could rent his apartment during Grand Prix weekend for AUD$700. Two nights sleeping on the sand for AUD$700, worth it!
Whether we like it or not, saving is difficult. Trying to cut costs can become extremely depressing if you aren’t able to enjoy yourself from time to time.
By supplementing your income with a part-time income on the side, you’ll be able to earn more money and move abroad sooner.
There are so many options out there from signing up to Uber, doing some freelance work, working in a pub, renting out your spare room, delivering food or doing one of a thousand different things, there’s always a way to earn a little extra money.
So what are you waiting for, go out there and find a part-time job and you’ll be living abroad before you know it!
